Hyperspin has created a library of literature outlining the parameters of its API. Resellers can access this through the company’s website. There are no additional fees for using the API. Hyperspin allows website owners and server administrators to maximize uptime by constantly monitoring the status of web services. The platform can monitor virtually any service, including HTTP, HTTPS, FTP, SSH, SMTP, DNS, POP3, IMAP, MySQL, and any arbitrary services running on TCP/IP. If the system detects downtime, Hyperspin sends a notification through email or cell phone text message (SMS).

RvSkin 7.12 security update released

Fri, 19 Jan 2007 01:58:23 +0000
If anyone is running cPanel with RVSkin, there is a new update that RVSkin released today to 7.12. The release fixes an important security issue in their software which I discovered and they patched after working with them.
Everyone should updated ASAP. To my knowledge the hole isn’t known to the public and I hope it ...]

Fun Fact: Google's Revenue is $17,066 Per Server

Mon, 19 Mar 2007 19:52:00 -0400

I read about this on Bert Amijo's blog. 3Tera CEO Vlad Miloushev did the math:

1. Google's infrastructure consists of 500,000 to 1 million servers.

2. Google's Q4, 2006 revenue was $3.2 billion. On an annualized basis, that's $12.8 billion.

If you divide #2 by #1, you'd get $12,800 to $25,600 of revenue per server. If you take the average and divide the amount by 12, you'd end up with $1,422/month in sales for each server. Google spends about 10% of its revenue on operations, which equals $142 per server.

As a point of reference, let's consider HostGator's announcement that it will expand its presence at The Planet. HostGator currently leases 1,700 servers, which are home to 500,000 websites. That's 294 sites per server. If HostGator collected as little as $4.84 from each site owner, it'd generate more revenue per server than Google!

HostGator's cheapest service plan costs $6.95/month, but it allows customers paying $9.95 or more to host multiple sites. Which most - including HostGator's 10,000 resellers - do. So Brent doesn't have Larry and Sergey beat. Yet. But while I was doing the calculations above, I remembered a conversation with Lenkov from SiteKreator. Thanks to some kind of caching magic (which ISP-Planet discusses in this article), Lenkov's software can support up to 30,000 simple websites on a two CPU machine.

Let's say Brent springs for a quad core Clovertown from The Planet, hosts only 15,000 websites, and charges each site owner $1/month. This would put him ahead of Google in terms of both revenue/hosting expense ratio, and sales per server.

ISP-Planet says SiteKreator can be licensed for an "unpublished fee". I'll have to ask Lenkov about that...

Today`s suggestion:

General Impression

IX Web Hosting has been in business since 1999 and has recently made a
remarkable appearance with the opening of their new data center in Hopkinsville,
KY.

With a highly professional website and very attractive hosting plans, they have
managed to be added to the list of companies that web-hosting-top.com is
reviewing. As the months passed by, IX WebHosting continuously improved its
performance in both reliability and customer service, resulting in extremely
quick loading websites and high customer satisfaction and consequently mastered
to be rated by our review team.

With over 170.000 domains hosted is more then obvious their value!

Price & Cost Effectiveness

IX Web Hosting's plans give you an excellent value. Regardless of your needs,
their plans allow you to save money right away - but the savings are even
greater if you need to host multiple domain names. Their billing cycles run from
quarterly, semi-annual to annual and 2-year billing cycles, the choice is yours
on most plans. The longer the billing cycle, the higher the discount that is
provided.

When hosting more than one domain name (multiple domain names or sub domains),
you can host them all on a single plan (Expert Plan and higher). You will save a
great deal of money since there are no fees at all for adding, removing, or
changing hosted domains and subdomains. You can manage it in real-time via the
control panel.

There was not a single billing issue with any of our anonymous test accounts, we
have always been treated with great respect and fairness. There were no over- or
unexpected extra on any of our hosting accounts. What is more important - when
we requested a refund for 2 accounts, we were granted a full refund without
questions asked. 100% money-back - including setup fees. An impressive approach
towards customer satisfaction.

They will help you with CGI scripts, upload problems, even if you don't know how
to use FrontPage - we were assisted kindly via telephone and their Live Chat
service. This is an important aspect for a web master maintaining multiple
websites, as for a busy website, there is a constant need to change your site's
content and scripts used. Where else can you get 200,000MB web space for
$3.95/mo, or unlimited disk space with multi domain hosting for $12.95/mo,
paired with a zero-risk 100% money back guarantee.

Reliability

During our extensive hosting experience with IX Web Hosting, we have had hardly
any server outages. It would be a lie to say none of our 23 anonymous test
accounts have never been down - however, the uptime track record for our test
accounts is impressive.

The question is not IF downtime happens, the question is when it happens and how
quickly your hosting company can resolve the problem. Quick problem resolution
is a must, so your site will be back online in no time.

Our overall reliability experience with IX Web Hosting is positive. They claim
to provide 99.9% uptime for all hosted accounts and they have a guarantee on
their website proving their track record. We had 100% uptime for the majority of
hosted accounts, however - 2 out of 23 accounts only had an uptime of 99.2% due
to a server glitch. The glitch was resolved quickly (within 90 minutes), however
the uptime amount of these two accounts did not reach 99.9% this month. After
inquiring with their billing department, we have been reimbursed for the
downtime that occurred with two free months of hosting service. We found this to
be an adequate compensation for 60 minutes of downtime.

Data Center (toured)

As the title indicates, we have personally visited and "examined" IX Web
Hosting's data center. The importance of doing that is obvious. You might have
heard of the "story" that 80% or more of the web hosts are just resellers, and
another 10% are just co-locating in some other data center, without direct
physical access to the machines. Unfortunately, that story is plain reality. We
have personally verified that IX Web Hosting's data center facility actually
exists by paying them a visit in Hopkinsville, KY. As the 16th data center we
visited, it was a rather pleasant surprise that they actually HAVE the equipment
they list on their website, as well as the security mechanisms, firewalls and
CISCO state of the art routers.

IX Web Hosting currently employs five redundant fiber-optic loops to connect
their data center. The fiber-optic connectivity is provided by Bell South,AT&T,
Verizon and 2x bandwidth is redundantly served by Qwest Communications. They are
currently busy upgrading their connectivity for future expansion.

Customer Service

In my entire career as professional web master, I have never seen more
responsive and technically sound support staff. I am thoroughly impressed by the
technical skills of the IX Web Hosting customer care team.

Regardless of which artificially created problem I have prompted them with,
everything was resolved within 24 hours: PASIV FTP issues, CGI scripts with
programming errors, PHP coding issues, ASP ODBC database connectivity, MSSQL
Enterprise Manager troubles, domain-lock and expiration tricks - we were not
able to fool them.

The support provided can be rated as above excellent, especially the 24 / 7 LIVE
CHAT feature. We have submitted a total of 450 support requests so far in the
past several months, and on 400 requests the response has immediately solved our
problem. The other tickets had to be reworked to send more details to the
technician. We called in via Live Chat at 3am and 5am EST several times and our
requests were answered promptly and courteously. Unlike other hosts, IX Web
Hosting is providing It is a true 24 / 7 chat service.

Control Panel

The basis of their control panel is H-Sphere, however IX Web Hosting's
programmer staff have modified it heavily. Both LINUX and WINDOWS hosting based
accounts are provided and the control panel functions flawlessly with accounts
on both platforms. The control panel they provide allows you to add, remove and
manage your domain names, subdomains, FTP accounts, email accounts, mailing
lists, auto responders, email aliases, MIME Types, Apache Indexes, PHP / ASP
configuration, mySQL, PostgreSQL and MSSQL databases, SQL database users,
cancelling and resuming your subscription and reporting trouble tickets from one
interface. In addition to the comprehensive functionality listed above, they
also offer an online file manager, an web design program called Site Studio as
well as Web Mail. All these features along with the senseful customizations IX
Web Hosting's programming department has applied to the control panel software
have made us rate this category with an astounding 100%.

You will find now a brand new billing system, outstanding from all points of
view.

The usage of the control panel it's self is very fast and reliable. The
administration of your whole account is very user-friendly and IX Web Hosting
provides an extensive customer guide with detailed explanations on how to use
your hosting account.

Online Services Okay with Partners

Tue, 11 Mar 2008 00:00:00 EST
March 11, 2008 -- ( <http://www.thewhir.com> WEB HOST INDUSTRY REVIEW) -- Last week, Microsoft announced that it had begun the beta program for its Online Services offering, a version of Exchange and SharePoint hosted by Microsoft and delivered as a service.

The e-mail account (your e-mail address) with the login (your login) and password (your password) with a quota of 5120 Megabytes was successfully created.

It was decided to switch on the nofollow attribute for all external links in the English Wikipedia. This has been an option for a while, and it was done now because of an influx of spam and talk of an SEO competition targeting Wikipedia. Whether it will stay this way for a while or indeed permanently, no one is really sure. If some links have not changed, I believe this is due to WP’s caching system, and they will be nofollow soon.

Assembling Self-Branded Services On The Cheap

Mon, 03 Jan 2005 00:00:00 EST
To bring a new dimension of value-added services to their clients, resellers can integrate a number of inexpensive software packages and online services into their core service offerings.

That’s the first line of an open letter posted on adwordsgoogle.de, docsgoogle.de and six other domain names. The sites’ owner and letter’s author, German IT guy Sebastian Klein, wants to give his domains to Google in exchange for a job.

Here is how you can do a trace route from your PC (Windows XP, Vista):

Rob LaMear, President at Frontpages remarked, ”Through the promise of a fully managed solution, Total Care Support provides the customer with the sense of security they require. Our hope is that by eliminating the need to worry, the customer can fully focus all resources on their core business and, thus, become more successful.”

One of the many disadvantages of Web design templates is that they almost all suffer from overusing graphics. The graphics are often large file sizes that suck up bandwidth and increase loading time. Worse yet, pretty butterflies, skyscrapers, or forests on the periphery of

your site, detract from the focus of your content. Graphics should be more than pretty objects adorning your site’s space.

1&1 Partners with Open-Xchange, but are They Competing with Microsoft or Google?

Mon, 26 Feb 2007 22:14:00 -0400

BusinessWeek reports that 1&1 will soon start deploying Open-Xchange mailboxes in Germany, followed by rollouts in the US, Britain and France. The article reports that 1&1 manages 5 million email accounts on behalf of 2.7 million web hosting customers. (This is wildly inconsistent with the 6 million hosting customers and 65 million emails accounts in 1&1's Business 2.0 ad. Maybe these figures include users from 1&1 parent company United Internet's Web.de and GMX portals business?)

With Open-Xchange's open source solution, 1&1 will be able to offer Microsoft Exchange-like features for $5 per user per month, versus its $10-$15 $6.99 current price. BusinessWeek says this is "nothing but bad news" for Microsoft, but are Microsoft and Open-Xchange competing with each other? Or should both be worried that end users like Steve Rubel are turning Gmail into their personal nerve centers?

Steve is a senior VP at Edelman PR, an enormous organization that no doubt has an industrial strength email system, but Steve is hooked on Gmail because:

"Everyday I come across something on the web that I want to save for future reference... since I travel a lot, I need to access my bits from a mobile device. The latest version of the Google Toolbar has a send to Gmail function. Select some text or graphics, right click on it and send it to Gmail... Whammo - an instant personal database."

A friend who works at Microsoft says he can use his Windows Mobile phone to search his Exchange archive as well. But 10 GB Gmail accounts are available for $4.17 each per month (mobile client, website builder and web-based word processor and spreadsheet included). That's a 10x larger personal database compared with 1&1's 1GB allocation (Outlook 2003 and free domain name included).

Another important question is, to what extent will 1&1 be able to drive Open-Xchange adoption? Yes, as the world's largest hosting provider, 1&1 can deliver an enormous audience. But seeing is *not* deploying. As a point of reference, when I switched from (POP mail + Outlook + Blackberry) to (Google Apps + Gmail mobile) last week, I realized that despite the conveniently-located Google Start Page icon on my control panel, I still like Netvibes better. But thanks to the Gmail and Google Calendar widgets on Netvibes, I was able to piece together a best of all worlds solution.

If I were 1&1 CEO Andreas Gauger, I would think along the same lines and open up my community and technology platform.
Customer A might prefer Gmail + 1&1's website builder, while Customer B might choose Open-Xchange mail + Google Pages. Why not use widgets, RSS and open APIs to help each user concoct his perfect combination?

In Case You've Read Otherwise, SmugMug Still Loves S3

Mon, 12 Mar 2007 17:01:00 -0400

Last Thursday night, I came across this SearchStorage.com article via the Storagezilla blog. Beth Pariseau wrote that Amazon's Simple Storage Service (S3) has had "performance and reliability issues serious enough" to prompt second thoughts among early adopters. In particular, SmugMug CEO Don MacAskill recently decided to move hot storage back in-house.

The instant I finishing reading the article, my RSS reader lit up with Don's response. He still loves Amazon, even if S3 hasn't solved the "speed of light problem". It takes at least 60-80ms for bytes of data to travel the distance between SmugMug's west coast location and Amazon's east coast data center. There's no getting around that. He moved hot storage closer to his web servers NOT to solve Amazon's performance problems, but to reduce those thousands of miles to inches. Don also tracked down the Storagezilla post and added a comment there.

Fast forward to this morning, when someone sent me a snippet from a Tier 1 Research news brief in which Dan Golding wrote about Amazon's disillusioned users. I gave Dan a hard time for basing his article on the same two customers Beth interviewed without giving her credit. Dan argued that attribution isn't customary in the analyst world. Besides, we shouldn't even be having this conversation. As a non-subscriber, I should have deleted any T1R content that came my way upon receipt.

Ironically, during his HostingCon presentation last year, T1R founder Andy Schoepfer's key message was "don't be an island". It's important for web hosting providers to connect customers to external ecosystems like eBay and Amazon, because no e-business can thrive in isolation. Given T1R's Hosting 2.0 advocacy, Dan's reaction seemed... Analyst 1.0-ish. But towards the end of our conversation, he did promise that an upgrade is on the way. As a point of reference, Burton Group, Dan's former employer, has a great blog that links to external sources. Same goes for Forrester. And at least 220 other research firms, including T1R parent company The 451 Group. Raven Zachary, who leads 451's open source practice, is even on Twitter!

Anyway, I'll get off my soapbox now and back to Amazon. I think every web hosting exec needs to read Don's blog post - along with Robert Cichon's post on customer satisfaction metrics. Robert said a hosting provider has done a good job if (a) the company gets written testimonials, (b) customers refer other customers because they're happy with service quality, and (c) customers defend the company against negative remarks. Amazon gets three points based on Don's reaction. What's your score?

Four Easy Ways to Tell They Love You - Thinking Outside the Box and Outside, Looking in

Sun, 11 May 2008 11:30:00 -0500

I know of two more tools for analyzing web site traffic - Google Analytics and Alexa. With Google Analytics, the site owner puts a script (provided by Google) in each web page to be analyzed. The script sends Google the visitors data for analysis (hence "Thinking outside the box"). Alexa takes an "Outside looking in" approach - PC users install the Alexa Toolbar, which collects data on their browsing habits. Alexa then uses this data to estimate the number of users that go to each site.

Google Analytics offers a granular view of site traffic, how/where it originates (searches, referrals or direct visits). Reports show what visitors are doing when they come to the site. All a site owner needs to do is open a Google account and paste the script in the pages (I included the script in PmWiki's CSS file's header section). Google Analytics offers free, powerful reporting features, which can be accessed on line, or emailed at preset times to selected individuals. This service is a win-win to both user and Google. I get an incredible amount of data on my users without spending a cent, and Google gets first hand user data, which they can use for world domination.

Alexa approach is to track where people who have installed the Alexa tool bar application are surfing. From this data, Alexa can tell how visits to your site rank relative to other sites, or compare the popularity of two sites over a period of time. The validity of the analysis is based on the assumption that their traffic data can be extended to the community at large. This assumption is almost surely wrong - Alexa users are a group whose characteristics are almost certainly different from the Internet users universe. For one, Alexa's site is in English, so o English speakers likely weigh heavily in the traffic analysis. Users with privacy concerns, or under repressive regimes, may be less likely to send their traffic to Alexa for analysis, etc. As in every statistical analysis, inference accuracy drops when less data is available, i.e. when a site is not very popular. To Alexa's credit, they openly recognize this fact. Graphical information is only available for sites in the top 100,000 sites.

Still, Alexa is a nice tool for a 'quick and dirty' traffic comparison between sites. For example, I find that words2u.net has a traffic rank of 7,737,112, which is up 3,297,142 places from 3 months ago. Alexa connects to the Wayback Machine archives to provide snapshots of web sites in past time. If you do not believe in reincarnation, a visit to that site might change your mind, especially if you happen on a site that changed ownership. Web site owners can check their ranking by pointing their browser to www.alexa.com/data/details/traffic_details/web.site.name.

hostgator Review:

Introduction

hostgator.com is a web hosting company with a wide range of reseller web hosting
and shared hosting solutions that are useful for achieving your business goals
and inexpensive enough as to be within the price range of individual users.

Services

Whether you are building a web site for your company to promote information
about your products and take orders, or just learning web design and putting
together a personal page for your family and friends, hostgator.coms shared
hosting products give you an inexpensive option for getting the web space that
you need. In addition, if you want added reliability and trouble shooting for
your enterprise hosting, The company has a dedicated hosting program for
competitive business rates. For the majority of other web space uses, their
guarantee of 99.9% uptime, support which is available twenty four hours a day
seven days a week, and a thirty day money back guarantee, are more than enough
to provide a reliable level of service.

Features

All of the web hosting packages available through the site provide the
capability to set up unlimited sites as many domains as the user should
require. They will also help you to transfer your old web site from your
previous hosting company to their servers for free. Hosting is also easy to
manage, with the popular CPanel management software and a variety of scripts
that you can install to perform common web site tasks. With just a few mouse
clicks you can install WordPress, or any number of PHP sites to provide
information and support to your readers and customers. Programs such as AWStats,
Webalizer and a raw log manager are provided free to users for keeping track of
web site statistics. A number of ecommerce features are also included, even with
the most basic of web hosting plans (these ecommerce scripts include shared /
private SSL, AgoraCart, osCommerce and Zen Cart) costing less than five dollars
per month! Other features include the ability to set up forums with a click, add
a guestbook and counter to your web site, quickly install blogging software so
that all you have to worry about is what to write about and when to post,
scripts to protect your site from being hotlinked, e-mail alias, mailing lists
and auto-responder scripts, and of course popular web site management tools such
as MySQL and Ruby on Rails.

Setup

The setup process for putting together a new web site or having your old web
site transferred over is very straightforward, with the site letting you start
by putting in the domain name of the site that you want and progressing through
a script that lets you select from the possible options for your site layout and
hosting plan. Massive amounts of disk space and bandwidth make it easy to
develop a large site with plenty of time before you have to think about
upgrading, and with the combination of great prices and money-back guarantees.

Quality and Awards

hostgator.com is a safe web hosting alternative that you can try out without
risking a lot of money. At these prices, the business is successful because it
provides the highest quality of service to its web hosting customers. The
company has also won numerous awards for their web hosting products and
services, such as the Findmyhost.com Editors Choice Award, as well as awards
from TopHosts.com, Webhost Magazine and Buyers Guide, RateMyHost, HostReview,
Host Critique, the Webhost Directory, and many more. Recently, they have
continued to develop the range of web hosting services available to their
customers with added scripts for search engine optimization, making it easier
for users to develop sites that show up in the topmost rankings of online search
engines such as Google and Yahoo. Also, even though they are one of the top web
hosting companies in the country and in the world, hosting over seven hundred
thousand domains for hundreds of thousands of customers, their site is still
very simply laid out and easy to navigate; unlike some other major web hosting
companies that try to sell you on lots of additional features and plans during
the ordering process, hostgator.com keeps things simple and straightforward,
making it easy to find the hosting that you need for a good price and not be
confused by an array of unnecessary add-ons. The web site also offers live chat
with support staff to help you set up your site and maintain it as it runs, and
their toll free line gives you a constant link to assistance. With all of these
things going in its favor, hostgator.com eats up the competition!
